About this tool

Compression trades a little visual detail for a much smaller file. For photographs the trade is usually invisible: dropping the quality to around 60 often halves the size with no difference you can see at normal viewing distance. Everything happens on your device, so nothing is uploaded to be compressed.

How to compress image

    Drop in one file or many. The listed sizes let you compare before and after.

    Choose the output format

    WebP compresses better than JPG at the same quality and is widely supported. AVIF is smaller again but slower to produce. Pick JPG only if something needs to open it that cannot handle the others.

    Lower the quality

    Start at 60 and look at the result. If it is good, try lower. Photographs tolerate aggressive compression far better than screenshots or images containing text.

    Optionally cap the dimensions

    Setting a maximum width or height shrinks the file further. Combining a modest resize with moderate compression usually beats heavy compression alone.

What to watch for

Compression is lossy and permanent

Detail removed by compression cannot be recovered by converting back. Always keep the original if the image matters. Compressing an already compressed file again causes visible degradation, so start from the best copy you have.

What compresses well and what does not

Photographs, especially with soft backgrounds, compress extremely well. Screenshots, diagrams, logos and anything with crisp text or flat colour do not: lossy compression puts visible fuzz around hard edges. For that kind of image, PNG at full quality or a resize is the better answer.

If the result is not smaller

Compressing a file that is already heavily compressed can produce something the same size or larger. If that happens, lower the quality further or reduce the dimensions instead.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser using code that was downloaded to your device. Your file is never sent to us or to anyone else, so there is no copy to store or leak.
How small can I make a photo?
A typical phone photo of 4 MB usually lands between 200 and 600 KB at quality 60 in WebP, and smaller again if you also cap the width. The exact result depends entirely on the content of the picture.
What quality should I use?
For web use, 60 to 75 is the normal range. Above 85 the file grows quickly for very little visible gain. Below 40 compression artefacts usually become noticeable.
Does compression remove EXIF data such as location?
Yes. The image is decoded to raw pixels and re-encoded, so camera metadata including any GPS coordinates is not carried over. That is a useful side effect before sharing a photo publicly.
