Add page numbers to a PDF

Stamp page numbers onto every page, or onto a range, in the corner you choose. The existing content is left exactly as it was.

Pages left out keep no number, but still count towards the total.

No upload

This tool does not upload your files

The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your files stay on your device from start to finish, there is no server copy, and nothing is stored once you leave the page. That is true for every tool on FileFlip.

About this tool

Page numbers matter when a document is going to be printed, bound, quoted from, or filed. Plenty of PDFs arrive without them, particularly ones exported from slides or produced by a scanner. This tool stamps a number onto each page in the corner you choose, leaving everything already on the page exactly as it was.

How to number PDF pages

  1. 01

    Add the PDF

Drop in the document you want numbered.

  2. 02

    Choose where the number goes

Bottom centre is the usual choice for a report. Bottom right suits something that will be bound on the left edge.

  3. 03

    Pick the wording

A bare number is the least intrusive. Page 4 of 20 is more helpful in a document people will print and hand around.

  4. 04

Set the start and the range

Start at any number when the document is part of a larger set. Leave the page list empty to number everything, or list pages to skip a cover.

What to watch for

The number sits on top of the page

Nothing is moved to make room. If your document already has content in that corner, choose a different position or increase the distance from the edge.

Pages you exclude still count

Leaving a cover out of the range means it gets no number printed, but the pages after it are numbered as though it were there, which is what a reader expects.

Numbers use a standard font

Helvetica is built into the PDF format, so nothing extra is embedded and the file barely grows.

Frequently asked

Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser using code that was downloaded to your device. Your file is never sent to us or to anyone else, so there is no copy to store or leak.
Can I use roman numerals?
Not currently. The three wordings offered are a plain number, 1 of 12, and Page 1 of 12.
How do I skip the cover page?
Put 2- in the page list. The cover then carries no number while the rest of the document is numbered from its own position.
Can I remove numbers I added earlier?
No. Once stamped they are part of the page content. Keep the original file if you may want to change your mind.
